War and Peace is a novel by the late Imperial Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy began writing it when he was 36 and published it in the magazine Russo-Russian Newspaper between 1865 and 1869.

Overview
Set during the Napoleonic Wars in the first half of the 19th century, the novel provides a detailed historical background of the Battle of Austerlitz and the Russian Campaign, in which the French army seized Moscow but was forced to retreat after the Battle of Borodino.

It also focuses on the rise and fall of three Russian aristocratic families (the Bolkonskys, the Bezukhovs, and the Rostovs) from 1805 to 1813. It details the love story between Pierre Bezukhov and Natasha and their awakening to a new era.

One of the characters, Pierre Bezukhov, is seen as the author's alter ego, and Pierre's spiritual journey from the declining Russian aristocracy to his devotion to the way of life of Russian peasants who continue to live strong on the land is said to reflect the author's feelings.

At the time of writing, the new modern Russian language had replaced the old Russian language that had been widely used until then. Still, the upper classes, including Tolstoy, used French daily as they had become educated.

The novel also depicts the influence of French culture on the Russian aristocracy of the time, as seen in the aristocrats' conversations with French speakers and their names being called " Pierre " in French ( Pyotr in Russian).

History of Russia

1)
History of Imperial Russia in the early 19th century.

Pierre (Henry Fonda), a progressive young man, respects Napoleon as a symbol of the French revolutionary spirit and is not as hateful as other Russian citizens of rumours of a French invasion of Moscow.

2)
At the Rostov Count's house, to which he was close, the departure of the eldest son Nicholas (J. Brett) to war left the Count (Barry Jones) and Countess with a sad look on their faces.

The departure of Nicholas' mistress Sonja (M. Britt), who has no property of her own, is at least a consolation for the Countess, as it also splits her relationship with him.

3)
Pierre's favourite is his daughter Natascha (Audrey Hepburn). Although Natasha is still a schoolgirl, Pierre and Natasha are as close as two siblings.

After seeing Nicholas off to war, Pierre causes a flamboyant ruckus at his idiosyncratic friend Drokov's party.

4)
As Count Bezukov's bastard son (born out of wedlock), he could not mix with the upper classes.
But news from his best friend, Prince Andrei (Mel Farrar), sends him to his father's bedside, where he is in a critical condition.

5)
Andrei has recently argued with his wife, Lise (Miri Vitale), and wants to leave for the battlefield as soon as possible.
In his father's will, Pierre inherited a vast territory. But Duke Cragin, who is present at Pierre's deathbed, has the idea of having Pierre seduced by his daughter Helene (Anita Ekberg).

6)
Andrei sends his pregnant wife to his country mansion and goes to the battlefield.
The strict father makes Andrei's wife, Lise, feel uncomfortable. However, his shy daughter Maria (Anna Maria Ferrero) sympathizes with Lise but keeps silent out of consideration for her father.

7)
Russian troops have arrived at the front—Natascha dreams of the generals' efforts. Pierre is busy preparing for his wedding to Helene.

Andrej went to the Czech hamlet of Austerlitz to serve as a staff officer to General Kutuzov (Oscar Homolka), the commander-in-chief.

8)
The result is defeat; Nicholas narrowly escapes, and Andrei is wounded.
An armistice is signed, and the generals return to Moscow.

9)
Andrei's wife, Lise, dies in childbirth, and Andrei is a changed and complex man.
Meanwhile, the flamboyant Helene seduced Dolokov. Pierre then hurt him in a duel and left his wife, Helene.

10)
Pierre's only consolation was to see Natasha, who fell in love with Andrei.

However, Natasha could not marry Andrei because of his father's opposition and saw him off to war.

11)
Natasha is then wooed at the opera by Helene's brother Anatole (Vittorio Gassmann), who encourages her to elope. However, Anatole is married.

12)
Sonja's news drives Pierre away from Anatole, but Andrei becomes melancholy again at the thought of Natasha, who cannot give up on Anatole.

13)
The Armistice is over, Anatole is killed in the decisive battle of Borodino, Andrei is badly wounded, and Pierre, now aware of his mistake, is also injured on the battlefield.

Kutuzov's scorched earth tactics caused the Rostovs to leave Moscow, and Pierre left alone, tried to shoot Napoleon but failed and was taken prisoner by the French.

14)
Andrei dies in Natasha's arms. Having given up on love, Sonia arranges for Nicholas to marry Maria, who has taken in Andrei's child.

15)
Pierre meets Platon (John Mills), a profoundly religious peasant in prison. During Napoleon's retreat from Moscow, Platon is shot, but Pierre is saved by Cossack cavalry under Dolokov.

16)
By November's end, Napoleon was defeated and fled to Paris.
On his return to Moscow, Pierre visited the devastated Rostov residence, where Natasha, now grown up, awaited him.

After watching this movie, anyone with parents will be left in quiet contemplation or wanting to call their parents ASAP.
