A look at the source of Escher's creativity. The documentary "M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity" to be released in December, 2019

1)
Escher is a Dutch printmaker and painter known for his trompe l'oeil paintings. The film "M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity", which unravels his unknown and eventful life and approaches the source of his creativity, will be released in cinemas nationwide from December 14th, including Uplink Shibuya and Uplink Kichijoji.

2)
Probably only one person can make a good film based on my work. That person is me. This was written by Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972), known worldwide for his so-called "trompe l'oeil". The film "M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity", which explores the secrets of Escher's unknown, eventful life and his works that continue to fascinate people, will be released on December 14th.

Escher was born in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. From 1919, he attended the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts, changing his major when his teacher, Mesquita, discovered his talent for printmaking. In 1935, he became fascinated by the tiles of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, and in 1937, he began making notes on the "regular division of planes". In the 1950s, he was interviewed by magazines such as "Time" and "Life" and suddenly became known worldwide, but he died in 1969 at 74, leaving behind his last work, "The Snake".

3)
This work carefully traces Escher's unknown life through more than 1,000 letters and diaries, interviews with his family and collector testimonies. The film also features musician Graham Nash, who says Escher heavily influenced him during the psychedelic movement of the 1970s. It shows the influence of Escher's work on everyday life and the source of his creativity.

4)
I would also like to focus on the visual expression through 3D animation. Escher's style changed significantly from his traditional works during the Second World War. This work reveals the thought process of how Escher visualised vague ideas and created his works.

Escher was both an artist and a keen observer. He kept many diaries and letters and detailed what he saw and felt. In this work, you can glimpse the source of Escher's career by talking about his personal life in his own words.
