//Summary - Level-C2//

Lily Gladstone, the first indigenous actress to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress, was honoured for her role in Martin Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon', a film based on actual events involving the exploitation of the Osage Indian tribe in the 1920s. In her acceptance speech, Gladstone highlighted her heritage, addressed human rights and thanked her team and the indigenous community. Her speech included greetings in her native Blackfeet language, emphasising the importance of preserving indigenous languages and cultures in the industry.

1)
"The Golden Globe Awards were held on 7 January 2024. Lily Gladstone became the first Indigenous woman to win Best Actress at the 81-year-old Awards ceremony, honouring films and dramas.

The historic award and the content of Lily's speech are attracting attention.

2)
Excellent performance in Scorsese's film based on a true story

Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese, was nominated for seven Golden Globes. The fact that it stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, that it is based on a series of mysterious deaths of indigenous people that happened in the United States in the 1920s, and that it is a blockbuster of over three hours means that it will be released in October 2023. It was a hot topic even before its release.

The story revolves around the Osage Indian tribe, who became wealthy when oil was discovered on a reservation in the southern state of Oklahoma, and the white people who settled there to "manage" their wealth, but in reality, to exploit it. This leads to a tragic end. The film is based on the best-selling book of the same name and a true story.

3)
Lily has educated many people about human rights.

Lily Gladstone plays an Osage woman in the film. Her father has Blackfeet and Nez Perce Indian roots, and Lily grew up on a Blackfeet reservation in Montana.

4)
In addition to posts showcasing the Native women who built America, the feed includes a memorial to the discovery of the bodies of 215 children at the site of a Native American boarding school in Canada in 2021 and a post about Juneteenth, which celebrates the abolition of slavery in the US, on 19 June, as well as a post protesting the hatred of Asians during the coronavirus pandemic.

She also wrote that when her role in Killers of the Flower Moon was announced, she felt "a great sense of responsibility and joy to have been entrusted with the role of Molly Kyle."

5)
Indigenous language greetings during speeches

When she took the stage to accept the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, she introduced herself in Blackfeet at the beginning of her speech.

6)
"Hello, my friend. My name is Eagle Woman, and I am from the Blackfeet Her Nation".
She then spoke in English about her hometown.

7)
"I have just spoken a few words about the Blackfeet, a beautiful community and a nation that has raised me and continues to encourage me to do what I want. My mother is also here. She is not Blackfeet, but she worked tirelessly to help me learn the Blackfeet language. I had a teacher who taught me the Blackfeet language."

8)
"This is a historic award. I'm grateful to be able to speak the language of my homeland, even if it's not fluent or only a little, because, in this industry, it's difficult for indigenous actors to represent the native language. There was even a time when sound mixers would play English lines backwards".

9)
"This award is not just for me. I carry this trophy with my lovely friends, everyone involved in the film and my mum, who is why I'm here. Marty, Leo, Bob. Thank you. You make a difference. Thank you for standing by me. Thank you, writer Eric, and thank you to Luther Standing Bear and the Osage Nation."

10)
"We send this award to children on reservations, to indigenous children living in cities, to all indigenous children. They have dreams written by us in their own words and perspectives. I appreciate your support."
