Michelle Obama's complete speech at the 2024 DNC (August 20 2024)

1)
00:09
Okay, we've got a big night ahead. Thank you all so much, and hello Chicago! Something wonderfully magical is in the air. We're feeling it here in this Arena, but it's spreading throughout the country.

We love a familiar feeling that's been buried too deep for far too long, but it's spreading all over this country.

2)
01:18
The hope, anticipation, energy, and exhilaration of once again being on the cusp of a brighter day, the chance to conquer the demons of fear, division, and hate that have consumed us and to continue to pursue this great nation's unfulfilled promise.

The dream that our parents and grandparents fought and died and sacrificed for America, hope is making a comeback, but to be honest, I realise that until recently, I have been mourning the fading of that hope.

3)
02:25
And maybe you've experienced the same feeling, this bottomless pit in my stomach, a palpable sense of dread about the future for me; this mourning has also been mixed with my grief.

The last time I was here in my hometown was to memorialise my mother, who showed me the meaning of hard work, humility, and decency.

I still feel her loss so profoundly. I wasn't even sure I was strong enough to stand before you tonight, but my heart compelled me to be here out of a sense of duty.

4)
03:22
I feel honoured to honour her memory and remind us not to squander our elders' sacrifices to give us a better future. You see, my mother, in her steady, quiet way, lived out that striving sense of hope every day.

She believed that all children and all people have value and that anyone can succeed if given the opportunity. She and my father did not aspire to be wealthy.

They were suspicious of people who took more than they knew, and they understood that it wasn't enough for their children to thrive.

5)
04:20
When everyone else around us was drowning, my mother volunteered at the local school. She always looked out for the other kids on the block.

And she was happy to do the thankless, unglamorous work that for generations has strengthened the fabric of this nation, the belief that if you do unto others.

If you love your neighbour, work, scrape, and sacrifice, it will pay off; if not for you, then maybe for your children or grandchildren.

These values have been passed down through family farms in factory towns, tree-lined streets and crowded tenements, and prayer groups.

6)
05:11
Kamala Harris and I built our lives on those same core values; even though our mothers grew up an ocean apart, they shared the same belief in this country's promise.

That's why her mother moved here from India when she was 19, and that's why she taught Kamala about justice, the obligation to lift others up, and our responsibility to give more than we take.

She often told her daughter not to sit around and complain about things and do something.

7)
06:01
So, with that voice in her head, Kamala went out and worked hard in school.
She graduated from an HBCU, earned her law degree from a state school, and then worked for the people, fighting to hold lawbreakers accountable and strengthening the rule of law

They are fighting for better wages, cheaper prescription drugs, a good education, decent health care, child care, and elder care from middle-class households.

8)
06:50
Kamala has worked up to become Vice President of the United States of America.
My girl Kamala Harris is more than ready for this moment. She is one of the most qualified people ever to seek the presidency.

And she is one of the most dignified tributes to her mother, my mother, and your mother, the embodiment of what it means to be a woman.

Her story is yours; it's mine, the story of most Americans trying to build a better life.
Look, know that we do, no matter where you come from, what you look like, who you love, or how you worship.

9)
07:42
We all deserve the opportunity to build a decent life. All our contributions deserve to be accepted and valued because no one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American.

No one has shown her allegiance to this nation, not by spewing anger and bitterness but by living a life of service and constantly pushing the doors of opportunity open to others.

She understands that most of us will never be afforded the grace to fail forward.

10)
08:40
We will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth if we don't get a second, third or fourth chance when things don't go our way if we don't have the luxury of whining or cheating others.

No, we don't get to change the rules, so we always win. When we see a mountain in front of us, we don't expect an escalator to take us to the top; no, we put our heads down, get to work in America, do something, and do it all our lives.

11)
09:43
We've seen that from Kamala Harris: the steel of her spine, the steadiness of her upbringing, the honesty of her example, and the joy of her laugh and her light.

It couldn't be more obvious who will tell him that the job he's looking for might be one of those black jobs. Look, it's his same old.

Look, is the same old con double ng down on ugly misogynistic racist lives as a substitute for fundamental ideas and solutions that will make people's lives better?

12)
10:42
Cutting our health care, taking away our freedom to control our bodies, and the freedom to become a mother through IVF as I did, those things are not going to improve the health outcomes of our wives and mothers and daughters.

Shutting down the Department of Education and banning our books, none of that is going to prepare our children for the future; demonising children for being who they are and loving who they look like doesn't make anyone's life better. Instead, it just makes us small.

13)
11:34
And let me tell you this: going small is never the answer. Going small is the opposite of what we teach our kids. Going small is petty, unhealthy, and quick.

It's presidential, so why should we accept this from anyone seeking our highest office? Why should we normalise the idea of backward leadership?

Doing so only demeans and cheapens our politics. It only further discourages good, big-hearted people from wanting to get involved in all of America. Our parents taught us better than this, and we deserve so much better than this.

14)
12:30
that is why we must do everything possible to elect two good, big-hearted people. There is no other choice than Kamla Harris and Tim Walls.

As we embrace this renewed hope, let us not forget our despair. Let us remember what we are up against.
Yes, Kamala and Tim are doing great now. We love it.

They are packing arenas across the country, and people are energised, but remember, there are still so many people desperate for a different outcome who are willing to question

15)
13:25
And criticise the companies eager to spread those lies who don't want to vote for a woman who will continue to prioritise her wealth over making sure everyone has enough, no matter how good we feel tonight, tomorrow, or the next day.

This is going to be an uphill battle, so folks, we can't be our own worst enemies and see because the minute something goes wrong, the minute a lie takes hold, folks. We can't start wringing our hands.

16)
14:13
We cannot indulge our fears about whether this country will elect someone like Kamala instead of doing everything we can to get someone like Kamala elected. Kamala and Tim have lived extraordinary lives.

I am confident they will lead with compassion, inclusion, and grace, but they are still human. They are not perfect, and like all of us, they will make mistakes, but luckily, this is not just up to them.

It is up to all of us to be the solution we see. It is up to all of us to be the anecdote to the darkness.

17)
15:17
And division, look, I don't care how you identify politically, whether Democrat, Republican, Independent or none of the above.

This is our time to stand up for what we know is the right to stand up, not just for our fundamental freedoms.

But for decency and humanity, for basic respect, dignity, and empathy, which are the values at the very foundation of this democracy.

It is up to us to remember what Kamala's mother told her: Don't just sit around complaining; do something.

18)
16:07
So when they lie about her, they will have to do something when they see a terrible poll. We must put the phone down and do something when we feel tired and the fear creeping back in.

We will have to pick ourselves up and splash water on our faces, and we've only got two and a half months, you all, to get this done—just 11 weeks to make sure every single person we know is registered and has a voting plan.

19)
16:57
So, we cannot afford anyone in America to sit on their hands and wait to be cold. Don't complain if no one from the campaign has specifically contacted you to ask for your support.

There is simply no time for that kind of foolishness. What you need to do, so consider this your official ask Michelle Obama is asking.

I am telling you all to do something because this election will be close in some states, just a handful.

Listen to me. A handful of votes in any precinct could decide the winner, so we need to vote in numbers that remove any doubt.

20)
18:00
we must overwhelm every effort to oppress us. Our destiny is in our hands in 77 days. We can turn our country away from the fear, division and smallness of the past.

We can marry our hope with our actions and pay forward the love, sweat, and sacrifice of our mothers, fathers, and all those who came before us.

We've done it before you and can certainly do it again. Let's work like our lives depend on it.

21)
18:52
Let's continue to move our country forward and go higher, consistently higher than ever, as we elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walls as the next president and vice president of the United States. Thank you all. God bless.

22)
20:01
Now, I have one more job to do tonight before I go.
Thank you for all the love, but now it is my honour to introduce someone who knows a lot about hope and has spent his life strengthening our democracy.

Let me tell you, as someone who lives with him, he wakes up every day thinking about what's best for this country. Please welcome Barack Obama, America's 44th president and the love of my life.

Kamala Harris Accepts Democratic Nomination

Vice President Kamala Harris called on Americans to join her to "chart a new way forward" as she accepted the Democratic nomination on Thursday, August 22, arguing her personal story and background as a prosecutor made her uniquely qualified to protect the nations' interests and beat Republican Donald Trump.

Taking the stage to massive applause at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Harris sought to introduce herself to the American public and outline her vision for leading the nation for the next four years.

Harris said that with this election, America has "a chance to chart a new way forward. Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans."

Harris' address in Chicago comes at the end of a dramatic eight weeks in American politics and represents a stunning change in Democratic fortunes just 75 days before Election Day.

Party leaders who had publicly despaired over President Joe Biden's chances for victory after his disastrous debate against Trump, were jubilant both at the historic nature of Harris' campaign and their much-improved hopes for this November.

The daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, Harris became the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to accept a major party's presidential nomination. If elected, she would become the first female US president.

In her speech, Harris talked about being raised primarily by her mother after her parents divorced and also highlighted her middle-class background. She outlined her career as a prosecutor, state attorney general, senator and now vice president, saying, "My entire career I've only had one client: the people."

Harris' promises to the American people included protecting abortion access, expanding voting rights, lowering housing costs and cutting taxes for the middle class.

Her speech — and the Democratic convention as a whole — was intended to appeal to a broad range of Americans, including centrists and Republicans who are dissatisfied with Trump.
