1)
Hiroyuki Sanada, to a new frontier

One of the most anticipated series, 2024, "SHOGUN", entered the streaming battle at the end of February. This historical drama, based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell, has become FX's flagship drama thanks to producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada (who also starred in John Wick: Consequences).

2)
Mr Sanada plays Yoshii Toranaga, a fictional military commander threatened and cornered by political opponents in Osaka in 17th-century feudal Japan. He commented on winning the role, "This is a big step in my life to move on to the next stage," "All I have to do now is complete the course and get my degree."

In that article, he said, "The basics are the same. I want to be a bridge between East and West - that is my mission".

3)
*FX is an American pay-TV channel. "SHOGUN" is produced by FX Productions. The Walt Disney Company owns both. Therefore, it will be distributed exclusively on Disney+ in Japan. It will be broadcast on FX and Hulu in the USA for the first time.

4)
The Bond Between Toranaga and Blackthorn, Created by a New Generation Cast

This drama series depicts the promising relationship between Yoshii Toranaga and British navigator John Blackthorn. Cosmo Jarvis has been cast as Blackthorn. Anna Sawai also appears as Mariko Toda, who becomes Blackthorn's translator because she is a devout Catholic.

5)
During her story, Mariko learns that England was in a religious war with Portugal and Spain and begins questioning her faith. She becomes involved in critical elements of the story as she becomes embroiled in political power struggles and struggles with her loved ones.

The last time this drama series was filmed was in 1980. The legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune played the lead role (Toranaga Yoshii), and the heroine (Mariko Toda) was Yoko Shimada. Richard Chamberlain played the role of Anjin/John Blackthorn.

6)
The gap between Japan's Christianity and politics that unites fate

Similar to Shusaku Endo's 1866 novel Silence, which Martin Scorsese adapted, SHOGUN revolves around introducing Christianity to Japan. The first two episodes depict Blackthorn's ship's grounding, imprisonment, and meeting with Toranaga.

7)
During this period, Spain and Portugal, decisive in Europe, expanded their colonial rule in Asia. One way they did this was by spreading Christianity (the Catholic Church and the Jesuits, a religious order within the Catholic Church) and turning it into a trading base.

For this reason, Europe restricted travel to Japan and even kept the route to Japan secret. This prevented other European countries from interacting with Japan.

8)
Therefore, Anjin/Blackthorn (a British man considered a Protestant) was the first to reach Japan. Eventually, Blackthorn escaped the death penalty and shared his knowledge of various Christian denominations with the Japanese.

9)
Toranaga immediately saw the value of using this foreigner. His political opponents, the Tairo, consider Blackthorn a heretic because of his Protestant beliefs, and his very existence blocks Toranaga's path to becoming a general. This would cause unrest among the people.
