
The dazzling open star cluster "Trumpler 14" observed by the Hubble Space Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope observed the open star cluster Trumpler 14 in the Eta Carinae Nebula, about 8,000 light-years away. The cluster contains around 2,000 very young stars, only about 500,000 years old. Some massive stars will become supernovae in the future. The image also shows a dark Bok globule, a dense cloud where new stars may form.

The stars in Trumpler 14 are thought to be only about 500,000 years old. There are approximately 2,000 stars, with masses ranging from less than 0.1 times that of the Sun to several tens of times.
The more massive a star is, the shorter its lifespan. The enormous star in Trumpler 14 is expected to explode as a supernova in a few million years. Until then, it will continue to influence its surroundings with powerful electromagnetic radiation and stellar winds.

If you look closely at the left side of the image, you can see a small black mass floating among the shining stars.
This is an isolated dark nebula called a "Bok globule." Bok globules are dense molecular clouds of gas and dust, and it is said that stars can sometimes form in them.
