The Wes Montgomery Trio: Jingles, 1960
1)
Wes Montgomery was a jazz guitarist born in Indianapolis, USA, on March 6, 1923, which is his birthday today. Wes died young on June 15, 1968, at the age of 45, but he was the pioneer who elevated the guitar to the forefront of jazz.
2)
Wes's picking style was fingerpicking, and his signature octave technique was played with just his thumb. It was a rare style, and it is unlikely that any other guitarist has inherited their style. He was self-taught and could not read music.
3)
Before his career as a guitarist, Wes worked long hours as a machinist, but since he would only practice guitar late at night, he decided to play with his thumb so as not to make too much noise and wake up his neighbours and children.
4)
Today, I would like to introduce "Jingles" from "The Wes Montgomery Trio" released in 1960. This trio has a rare lineup of guitar, organ, and drums. The organ is played by his friend Melvin Rhyne, and the bass line is also played on the left-hand side of the organ.
