Wuthering Heights(1939)

Synopsis:
Samuel Goldwyn produced the film, which was directed by William Wyler in 1939. Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur adapted Emily Bronte's novel, one of the great works of English literature. The film stars Merle Oberon (The Musical Master Chopin) and Laurence Olivier (Hamlet, 1947).

1)
In the north of England, a desolate mansion called Wuthering Heights. The master of the manor, Anshaw (Cecil Kellaway), was a compassionate old gentleman who picked up a starving gypsy boy on a journey to Liverpool, named him Heathcliff and made him a member of his family.

2)
Anshaw had a son, Hindley, and a daughter, Cathy, but Hindley hated Heathcliff and abused him at every opportunity. Cathy, an actor, was close to Heathcliff, and they often acted together on Penistone Rock, which they compared to their castle.

3)
After Anshaw's death, Hindley (Hugh Williams), who became head of Wuthering Heights, banished Heathcliff (Laurence Olivier) from the mansion to the stables, but Cathy (Merle Oberon) and Heathcliff still had hopes for the future.

4)
Time passed. Hindley spent his days drinking and women, while Cathy was deeply attracted to Heathcliff but longed for a glamorous, upper-class life.

The two went to a ball at the Linton family home, where Cathy was severely mauled by a dog and had to stay to have her wounds dressed.

5)
Edgar (David Niven), heir to the Linton fortune, proposes to the beautiful Cathy. Concerned about whether to confide in Heathcliff or Edgar, Cathy confesses her feelings to her maid Ellen (Flora Robson) but realises that she is one with Heathcliff and cannot be separated from him.

6)
But Heathcliff misunderstands Cathy's feelings and disappears from Wuthering Heights. Cathy marries Edgar. Two years later, Heathcliff becomes successful in South America and returns to Wuthering Heights, a changed man.

He buys Wuthering Heights from Hindley, who has squandered his fortune on Drin and waits for an opportunity to take revenge on the Lintons.

7)
He approaches Edgar's sister Isabel (Geraldine Fitzgerald) and asks her to marry him. Cathy knows what Heathcliff is up to. Taking her advice, Isabel asks her sister-in-law to stop slandering Heathcliff out of jealousy and becomes the mistress of Wuthering Heights.

8)
However, Isabel was treated worse than a servant. Cathy finally went to her bed and confessed before she died that Heathcliff was the one she loved.

9)
Heathcliff shouted at Cathy's corpse to visit him as a ghost as long as he lived. Then, on a blizzard night, as if possessed by the call of Cathy's ghost, he went to the bottom of Penistone Rock and died there.
