Gwangju Uprising

The Gwangju Uprising was a civil uprising against the military government demanding democratization from May 18 to 27, 1980, mainly in Gwangju City (now Gwangju Metropolitan City), the provincial capital of South Jeolla Province in South Korea.

Like the Jeju April 3 Incident and the Bodo League Incident, which occurred after the country's founding in 1948 after World War II, this was one of the massacres of South Korean citizens by the South Korean military, resulting in the deaths of many civilians through simultaneous firing by the army. In this incident, the citizens could not achieve their goal of democratization and overthrowing the military government. Still, seven years later, in 1987, the military government issued the June 29th Declaration of Democratization, which allowed freedom of speech and direct presidential elections.
