Under the Silver Lake/What is the protagonist's motivation?

1)
I went to see Under the Silver Lake, directed by David Robert Mitchell, which I was looking forward to.

It was a storm of references to magazines, games, advertisements, music, and movies, and even after watching it, I was left wondering what it was all about.

2)
The score was always discordant, repeating clichés that foreshadow something to happen. I couldn't tell if everything was real or an illusion. It was both grotesque and comical.

3)
The film was full of scenes with something about to happen, and the music created a more ominous atmosphere than the images. There was always a sense that a murder or something scary was approaching from behind.

I felt it was a film depicting American Gothic, like Hitchcock or Lynch.

4)
I think many people will speculate about this film, but it wasn't even mentioned in the pamphlet.

This song is actually the essence of this film, and I think the background of this song also explains the protagonist, Sam, in a way.

5)
This song is included at the beginning of REM's hit album Monster, released in 1995 and was released as a single the previous year.

This strange title refers to the phrase "What's the frequency?" said by the perpetrator of the radio wave assault.

6)
As the CD liner notes say, "The antenna in my head caught the radio waves," and I caught the conspiracy theory! I think that was the driving force behind the protagonist, Sam, in this movie.

Every media has a hidden message, and Sam believes someone is sending and receiving this message without his knowledge.

7)
So, I can't say that this song contains the whole meaning of this movie... but it's scary to imagine what Sam, who seems to be schizophrenic, might do with a gun.

8)
The separation from Sarah, confined in an underground shelter, feels like the end of the world, or that they have been separated far into the universe, and there is a strange sadness to it.

9)
It's too detached from reality to be empathetic, but in the movie, the two characters are looking for a connection, and both Sam and Sarah may have wanted a different ending than the one depicted in the film.

10)
This film belongs to the same category as recent films like Fight Club and Her, which intersect reality and fantasy.

This film is so crazy that it makes Mulholland Drive (the first half of which is about the protagonist's conspiracy theories) look tame.

At this point, I'm not even sure if it's a masterpiece.
That may be the appeal of this film.
