Tsuyu Kosode Mukashi Hachijo - Kamiyui-Shinza
Yellow kimono produced in Hachijojima during the rainy season - hairdresser Shinza
//SUMMARY//
In this story("Sewamono"), the main character is a visiting hairdresser named "Kamiyui Shinza."
He is a villain because he encourages lovers to elope but deceives them to make money. Finally, he fights them in a duel after they are hated.
Shinza is the main character, even though he is a villain, because he looks cool and has a good physique.
He is a bad guy but good-looking, making women fall in love with him.
Ultimately, he has to follow the even worse landlord, so he has a playful side. Of course, in the last scene, the gambling boss who hates him kills him.
The kabuki has "Jidaimono" and "Sewamono".
"Jidaimono" is set in a time older than the Edo period and mainly depicts samurai society.
"Sewamono" is a play that depicts obligations, human feelings, love, conflicts, etc., set in the lives and customs of townspeople in the Edo period. It is a modern drama that was real to the ordinary people of that time.
1)
Hottogisu(a little cuckoo), first bonito, rainy sky.
The shadows of small-town girls, small-time villains and yakuza emerge from the seasonal atmosphere of downtown Edo.
The protagonist is Shinza, a hairdresser who goes from house to house to do people's hair.
Okuma, the daughter of the lumber wholesaler Shiroko-ya, and the shop's servant Chūshichi are in love.
2)
Okuma-san is proposed to have a son-in-law.
Shinza sees the heartbroken couple and persuasively encourages Chūshichi to elope with Okuma.
Shinza takes Okuma to his house in a basket (a vehicle used to carry people by hand), then hits Chūshichi with an umbrella and leaves him on the street at night.
3)
When Chūshichi discovers that he has been tricked into kidnapping the daughter of the owner of his shop, he tries to commit suicide.
However, he is kept back by Yatagoro Genshichi, a man of chivalry who helps the weak and discourages the strong.
The next day, Genshichi is given money from Shirakoya and asks Shinza to return to Okuma, but Shinza rejects this offer.
However, the house owner for rent, Chobei, persuades him to return to Okuma.
Genshichi, having been disgraced by Shinza, awaits Shinza later and confronts him with his sword.
i)
Synopsis.
Acquiring a son-in-law:
The timber merchant Shirakoya is in financial difficulties after the fall of its owner. After her husband dies, Otsune tries to get her only daughter, Okuma, a son-in-law, with a dowry to rebuild the business.
However, Okuma, a small-town girl with a good reputation, loves Chūshichi, the shopkeeper's assistant.
Her mother begs Okuma to accept her son-in-law's offer, but Okuma is determined to elope with Chūshichi.
Shinza, a hairdresser, learns of the situation and persuades Chūshichi to escape with Okuma.
ii)
Five minutes and five minutes under the umbrella:
Chūshichi is tricked into first letting Okuma escape to Shinza's Fukagawa house.
Shinza and Chūshichi come to Eitai-bashi Bridge under a shared umbrella in the pouring rain.
Shinza changes his attitude and belittles Chūshichi, hitting him with an umbrella and telling him that Okuma is my wife.
Chūshichi realizes he has been deceived but has no idea where Shinza's house is. He is about to throw himself in the river when he is rescued by Yatagoro Genshichi, a master who has the Kanda area as his territory.
iii)
Life in a tenement house:
Shinza's tenement in Fukagawa Tomiyoshicho. Shinza has taken Okuma as his own and buys an expensive first bonito on his way home from the morning bath, which puts him in a good mood and boosts his business.
Then Zenpachi, a man who transports goods for the Shirakoya family, brings Yatagoro Genshichi, an influential and well-known man in the area, to the house.
Shinza speaks ill of him and knocks back the 10-ryo ransoms offered by Genshichi as a ransom for Okuma.
Genshichi is furious but feels he is not mature enough to be angry with someone of a lower rank, so he relents and leaves.
iv)
Landlord:
Zenpachi went to the landlord of the tenement, Chobei, crying out for advice.
Chobei had allowed Shinza, an ex-convict, to live there. He scolded Shinza and told him to be grateful for that.
He convinces him with a ransom of 30-ryo from Shirakoya and sends Okuma home.
Chobei then returns home with half of the bonito and the ransom.
v)
Hell is the whole of hell:
Over the next few months, Shinza will become famous as a full-fledged villain, while the mocked Yatagoro Genshichi will lose money, and business will slow down.
Genshichi ambushes Shinza at Enma-doh Bridge, which has a connection to hell, and in an attempt to settle a lingering grudge, he strikes Shinza with a sword.
Here, Shinza and Genshichi exchange a dialogue called 'Jigoku Zukushi', named after the bridge's name, Enma.

What is the real Kihachijo? Its production area and characteristics! What is the ultimate attraction for kimono lovers?
Kihachijo, with its striking bright yellow colour, is also famous as the costume worn by town girls in Kabuki and Joruri.
During the Edo period, Edo women loved it, and even today, it is said to be "the final kimono that kimono lovers reach for."
One of the charms of Kihachijo is its colour.
The beautiful silk fabric is dyed with natural dyes, and only three colours are used: yellow, black, and birch.
The authentic Kihachijo is produced in Hachijojima, Tokyo. This time, we have summarized its production area, history, and characteristics.
Hachijojima is an isolated island about 300 km south of Tokyo, blessed with abundant nature.

Kamiyui Shinza - It's best to watch it during the season of fresh greenery!

The true story was more shocking. It was based on a story, and it was pretty shocking. Okuma, a lumber merchant at Shirakoya, was having an affair with her clerk, Chushichi and did not like Matashiro, who had married her.
Her real mother, Otsune, had the maid Okiku attack him.
When this was discovered, a trial was held by Lord Ooka Echizen.
The results were as follows:
Okuma (21 years old) was paraded through the city and sentenced to death.
Chushichi was paraded through the city and sentenced to death.
Otsune was sent to an island. Her father was banished from Edo.
The maid, Kiku, was sentenced to death. The maid Hisa was paraded through the city and sentenced to death.
The title of this play comes from the fact that Okuma was wearing a "Kihachijo" kimono when she was paraded through the city.
It's somehow more shocking than kabuki. Truth is stranger than fiction.

TSUYU KOSODE MUKASHI HACHIJO - Kamiyui Shinza by Kawatake Mokuami - Three Acts
//Summary - Level-C2//
Kamiyui Shinza is a kabuki play that initially had four acts. It focuses on the wicked barber Shinza and highlights his deceitful behaviour, particularly in a love triangle involving Okuma, a merchant's daughter, and her lover, Chushichi. After betrayal, Okuma is rescued, but later tragedies lead to Shinza's death by a gambling boss, Genshichi, and subsequent murder trials.
1)
More Commonly known as Kamiyui Shinza("Shinza the Barber"), this Sewamono ('domestic' play) was first performed at Tokyo's Nakamura-za in 1873.
The story is based on an incident in 1727 when the daughter of a lumber merchant killed her betrothed and was found guilty of murder by a noted magistrate.
2)
The original play has four acts and eleven scenes, but most scenes concerning the magistrate are no longer performed.
Only the six scenes concerning the wicked barber Shinza are regularly presented today.
The highlights are Shinza's chicness and behaviour as a pretty villain, bonito seller, and sense of early summer in the manners and customs of the Edo period in hairdressing.
3)
Story and Highlights:
The fortunes of the Shirokoma lumber merchant have declined since the establishment's master died.
His beautiful daughter Okuma, however, is soon to be married, and the employees hope for a revival of the company's fortunes.
The matchmaker for Okuma's marriage is an influential businessman responsible for the dowry, which the young man must pay so that he may buy his way into the Shirokoya business.
4)
As the curtain opens, the matchmaker finalizes the dowry with Okuma's mother.
Okuma appears unhappy about the impending marriage, and the maid guesses that the reason for Okuma's tears is that she loves Chushichi, their sales clerk.
Chushichi overhears them talking and is dismayed that his lover is betrothed to another.
Just then, the hairdresser, Shinza, enters and offers to help the lovers elope by letting them hide at his home.
5)
The next scene takes place later that night. Okuma is carried off in a palanquin by Shinza's apprentice, followed by Shinza and Chushichi.
It becomes clear that Shinza has no intention of helping Chushichi and wants Okuma for himself.
He knocks Chushichi down and goes off.
In despair, Chushichi is about to throw himself in the river when a gambling boss called Genshichi appears. He stops the young man and vows to help him.
6)
The second act begins in Shinza's house, where he lives with his apprentice, Katsu.
They have locked Okuma in a cupboard, but her cries disturb the neighbours.
Shinza arrives home from the bathhouse and buys an expensive bonito fish for them to eat.
7)
Genshichi comes to persuade Shinza to allow the girl to leave. Shinza claims he and the girl are lovers and refuses to be intimidated.
He was insulted by Genshichi leavers, vowing to get his revenge.
Meanwhile, the girl's family, fearing a scandal if she does not return soon, enlists the help of Chobe, Shinza's landlord.
8)
Chobe arrives at Shinza's house to negotiate the girl's safe return.
Shinza and Katsu are enjoying their bonito and, to keep on the landlord's good side. Shinza offers him half the fish.
9)
Chobe offers Shinza 30 gold pieces to let the girl go which, after some argument, he reluctantly accepts.
The highlight of the play is when the wily Chobe counts fools Shinza and Katsu by saying that, in addition to the fifteen, he gets half the fish - and half of thirty is fifteen!
Although this is complete nonsense, the stupid Shinza and Katsu are totally baffled by it and even lose two more pieces of gold for the rent they owe.
10)
In a final comical twist, he successfully negotiated Okuma's release and was happy to go home with half the fish.
A messenger informs Chobe that his house has been robbed. SHinza and Katsu are delighted as he runs off in a panic.
11)
The final scene takes place several weeks later near the temple at Fukagawa.
Genshichi, the gambling boss, appears.
Shinza comes by and is confronted by the boss, who is still angry at Shinza's treatment of him. They argue and slash hard at each other.
A)
The kabuki ends here, but there is more to the story.
Genshichi finally kills Shinza with a sword.
He is then suspected of Shinzo's murder and put on trial by the magistrate.
B)
Okuma also tried to kill herself for Chushichi but accidentally stabbed her son-in-law Matashichiro to death. This trial will also take place today.
When Chushichi hears this, he decides that at least he will take the blame for the murder and die for Genshichi's sake.
C)
Ooka Echizen says that Chushichi killed Shinza, but he quickly sees through the lie to protect Genshichi.
When presented with evidence, Genshichi admits his guilt.
Genshichi is thrown into prison, and Okuma is placed in the custody of her mother, Otsune.

I looked into whether you can see kabuki in various regions of Japan.
I discovered that "tour performances" go around the country for one day at a time, but the same performance occurs over a month in Japan.
You can't see the same performance in the same place for a month as you can at the Kabukiza in Tokyo.
However, there seem to be opportunities to see kabuki even in the regions.
You can see kabuki in various places, including two locations in Tokyo (Ginza and Shinbashi), Osaka, Kyoto, and on tours around the country.
