The Festival of Up Helly Aa (English subtitles ver.)
Every year in the Shetland Islands in northern Scotland, the Viking fire festival of Up Helly Aa takes place.
Filmed with Panasonic’s latest professional camera equipment, this video introduces the brilliant display of the fire festival and the human figures living in the harsh northern environment, with a wide dynamic range unique to HDR.
1)
In the far northeastern part of Scotland lies my home, where the North Sea hits the Atlantic Ocean.
With over 100 rugged islands, just 15 are inhabited. This is Shetland.
2)
After a long, cold, dark winter, the people here prepare for the biggest celebration of their year.
The festival of Up Helly Aa.
3)
Up Helly Aa is an expression of our Viking culture, which runs through the veins of the people here.
It started over 131 years ago
A magical celebration of Shetland history and a demonstration of our skills and spirit.
4)
It lasts just one day and night, but it takes 364 days to organize and exists on hard work and the goodwill of many people.
We build a galley ship, hundreds of fire torches, costumes, shields and axes.
Much of the preparation is in the strictest secrecy
5)
The biggest secret of all is what the head of the festival
the Guiser Jarl will wear and what character from the Norse saga he will represent
Each Jarl is elected 15 years in advance and will be planning and saving for the longest and most enjoyable day of his life.
I have had the privilege of being Guiser Jarl, and the emotions of leading my Jarl squad will stay with me for life.
6)
I'm excited to be the Junior jail for 2018.
It felt kind of surreal the whole thing, like leading the squad after all the build-up and it actually happening
Maybe in the future, if I am given the opportunity, I will be Senior Jarl.
7)
It's very important. I've grown up with Up Helly Aa since I was a small child.
But through the years, I've just been a squad member
I joined the committee, and through the committee, I've been there for 13 years.
Today, it's a privilege to be Guizer Jarl.
My family is excited; we are all excited.
The squad's inside; we're ready to go.
8)
As the sun sets on Shetland, over 900 Guizers, form ranks on the darkened streets, waiting for the Jarl and his squad to emerge from the town hall.
The torches are lit, and the streets become a sea of fire.
And the long day we have all been waiting for begins.
9)
Up Helly Aa is a special day for me and my people. It is a tradition that must be handed down from generation to generation so it can continue for many years to come.

Up Helly Aa - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_Helly_Aa
Up Helly Aa (/ˌʌp hɛli ˈɑː/ UP-hel-ee-AH; literally "Up Holy [Day] All") is a type of fire festival held annually from January to March in various communities in Shetland, Scotland, to mark the end of the Yule season. Each festival involves a torchlit procession by squads of costumed participants (known as guizers) that culminates in the burning of an imitation Viking galley. The largest festival held in Lerwick, Shetland's capital, involves a procession of up to a thousand guizers who march through the streets of Lerwick on the last Tuesday in January. The other rural festivals (known as the 'country' Up Helly Aas) see lower numbers of participants in accordance with their lower populations.

Shetland has 12 annual winter festivals, during which our communities celebrate the return of lighter days, our Norse heritage, and the end of the Yule season.
The largest and most well-known is Lerwick Up Helly Aa, held last Tuesday of January.
But the first annual festival happens in just a few days: Scalloway Fire Festival on Friday, 10 January 2020. From there, festivals run throughout our islands and local communities until mid-March.
